About Jim Martin
My name is Jim Martin and I was born in Estherville, Iowa. Although I was born in Iowa I actually consider my-self a Texan. I lived in Iowa for about a week and then my mother and father brought me to Texas where I lived most of my life. I have two older brothers and an older sister. I went to high school in Plano, Texas. I went to college at Virginia Military Institute and the University of Texas at Dallas. I currently live in Wylie, Texas a city just outside of Dallas. When I'm not busy working as a software engineer I spend the majority of my free time playing and practicing piano and creating music in my small home studio. I was fortunate enough to have parents that got me involved with piano when I was young, but like most kids I didn't really take it serious and it wasn't until I was out of college and established in my career that I really missed music. On January 1, 2007 I made a resolution to start taking piano lessons and I've been studying and practicing piano since that date.
Professional
I'm a lead software engineer for Telligent Systems in Dallas Texas. Telligent is a software and solutions company with unique expertise and knowledge of the Microsoft .NET platform. My focus is primarily on the services side at Telligent but I was also involved in some aspects of Telligent's Community Server product. I joined Telligent on March 15, 2005 shortly after the company's birth. It is by far the best job I've ever had and I absolutely love working at Telligent. I'm fortunate to also love my line of work and I wouldn't trade it for anything.
I'm currently an officer for the North Dallas .NET Users Group. When I'm not at work or playing music I'm usually helping keep the user group going. I love being able to give back to such a great community of local developers.
My IT career began as an information analyst, focusing on custom applications to support company initiatives for Fujitsu Network Communications in Richardson, Texas. After almost five years at Fujitsu I moved to Brink's Inc. where I worked for almost two years as a programmer analyst on a custom solution used to manage the Brink's armored fleet and cash movement.
